To my lil protege
Updated: Mar 25, 2019
There’s this brilliant special little girl in my life who loves to sing and perform like her auntie MahJ.
I don’t remember your initial reactions seeing your auntie on stage singing her heart out but what I found out after by your mother was the most amazing thing! You were supposedly completely memorized and wanted to be just like your auntie after that; with microphone and all! So your wonderful supportive parents got you a toy microphone (we got you the kids drum instrment set) and the rest is history-her story in the making.
When you first got it she said she wanted to do it like auntie and you even make up songs and stories up on your own my love! So I begged for your mother to send me the videos. (I love your original about the tress)
Music especially performing; is the most powerful connection I have with the rest of world and now YOU and your brother are my world; precious niece! And I will always sing your praises! 💟
Yesterday you turned 4 and I have already given you a few real lessons regarding how to hold a real mic, how to hold notes and slow down for a finale for the ABC song to start. But I’m overjoyed to have the littlest biggest fan right in my family.
(I’ve always been the singer in my own family so I’ve have the sheer joy to inspire my amazing baby cousins. Some I’ve even given vocal lessons to while babysitting).
The pure joy never gets old.
But having a baby niece who looks up to me as I am in my most vulnerable yet alive states on and off stage is a whole new experience and pure blessing!
But 4 years and 9 months ago I didn’t think about that at all...(a message to my precious baby niece/birthday girl on her birthday)
...I remember feeling so bad and highly concerned for your mom when she announced she was pregnant with precious you. Your father and mother were just married. And your father was in another country. Your mother had no security, career or plan to bring an innocent baby into this world.
I remember her parents calling it a crisis after they found out. They specially warned your beautiful young mother not to immediately get pregnant right after the wedding. True loving parents always want the utmost best for their babies after all.
“Save money, enjoy each other as husband and wife, make sure he is established. Don’t rush it...” Do it the “RIGHT” way but honestly...we were all wrong.
I never fell in love so fast before Reem! You were so tiny but perfect and pure!
Your father wasn’t there to welcome his first child in the flesh but your mother carried all the love from the both of them. Not including your beyond amazing grandparents and handsome inspiring Uncle.
Now that’s he is here in America; your papi is the most hardest working provider and amazing father for you and your baby brother.
Birthday girl! The love I have for you Reem and your baby brother Adam is truly indescribable. And for a writer that says a lot.
I will never stop loving you. And even though auntie and uncle are the ‘too busy rich ones’ we will never stop loving you, working hard to assure you and your brother a bright future and SPOILING you with all our big fancy things but also with our truest of hearts and discipline and life lessons only an older experienced couple like your “cool” auntie and uncle can provide. You will never EVER be without, needing Or deficit...you May want a lot of things we all may say “no” to but only because we desire the best for you and will not tolerate anything less. And luckily your hardworking loving parents and amazingly supportive grandparents agree; with all 6 of us; we will always strive to make you the happiest, most loved girl who will grow up to know your worth, power, and strength as a girl and one day empowered woman. You are so loving, smart, caring, independent and fierce already and I feel so mf blessed and favored to be your auntie...
As a completely unplanned role model for you; I solemnly promise to always show you my truest self; a strong force of nature of a woman and force who has stayed true to her love, dreams, passions, mind, body, wild side despite all the adversity and obstacles faced in life. I pray you see passed the glory and fun of your auntie being an entertainer and focus on the other things that make me who I am. To be a compassionare, empathic, human loving and advocating warrior of love, life, strength, and healing; rediscovering her power despite all the bad days, fears and darkness the world throws at her. God sometimes tested the strongest and most worthy of warriors that way. In that sense, your auntie is highly favored and you are as well Reem.
And if you learn anything from your auntie, I hope and pray it’s this: music and the microphone hold power and revere BUT never compared to your own voice and heart babygirl.
Whether in whispers, sing alongs, prayers, screams, cries, stories written or spoken and every experience and memory in between. Always remember you and your voice matter!
You are a miracle just being You! A full grown miracle the moment you were born my love. And the future is yours to follow your hearts biggest desires and truths. And no matter what transpires: This aunt of yours will continue singing your praises. Re writing history so your present and future is brighter that all the spotlights and songs combined.
Thank you for already being so fierce, loving, independent, smart and open to the magic of music.
The music has been a God given gift. A true perpetual beacon of LIGHT, Happiness, Strength, Healing, Joy for your aunt since she was 3.
The same age you were when you first saw your auntie on stage singing her heart out babygirl.
You are my shining star Reem. Thank you for making me a role model but most blessfully for making me an aunt! Truly the best performance of my life yet. Love you always habbty! Happy Birthday Reem.
